The demand for local organic produce has risen after a series of food crises on the mainland. A farmers' market, held in busy districts over the past two weeks, proved that demand.
The new Sunday market has been held at Pak Sha Road in Causeway Bay and Wan Chai's Gloucester Road Park. There will be another at Pak Sha Road on December 10, while the Wan Chai one will run until the end of April.
Organised by the Hong Kong Organic Farming Association (HOFA), the market is also supported by the steering committee of Wan Chai's 'Hygienic, Healthy and Dynamic City' Scheme, Wan Chai District Council, Greenpeace China, Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden, and the Wan Chai Home Affairs Department.
The farmers' market - a popular event in the west - came as there were concerns about hen and duck eggs from China. Reports said some of them were contaminated by a banned dye.
Chu Pui-kwan, chairperson of the HOFA, said it was time the public learned about food safety, and how to choose healthy food.
'Since the outbreak of Sars, the demand for organic produce has been rising. It's even more obvious whenever there is negative news about food from China,' she said.
