Dominic Chu Fu-yau, chairman of the Subsidised Secondary Schools Council, which represents more than 400 schools, said he would continue to hold an ex-officio role on the council which he has been involved in for more than 20 years, to allow for a period of continuity.

'I still have two years before I retire,' he said. 'I decided to step down and let someone younger take over the reins.

'But I will continue to sit in on meetings and offer my advice when necessary.'

At the council's annual general meeting on Tuesday, members elected Shelly Wong She-lai, principal of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Kap Yan Directors' College in Sheung Shui, as Mr Chu's successor.
