It has been 50 years since Hong Kong won a medal at the Asian Games in athletics.

Stephen Xavier won a bronze in the men's 200 metres when Hong Kong made its debut in the Manila games in 1954.

Now Hong Kong has a medal hope with Tang Yik-chun (pictured), also in the men's 200m.

The sprinter finished fourth in the 200m at the Asian Championships in Incheon, South Korea, last year and took a bronze medal at the national games in Nanjing. And he hopes an improved result in Doha will give Hong Kong a long overdue athletics medal.

'I am pretty confident,' said the 20-year-old, who only started full-time training two years ago. 'I came close to a bronze medal at the Asian Championships last year and this is a great chance.'

Tang's record stands at 20.94 seconds and he still has some way to go to reach the top Asia level. Hamed Hamdan Al-Bishi of Saudi Arabia won last year's championships in 20.66 seconds, followed by Tatsuro Yoshino of Japan (20.68) and Yang Yaozu of China (20.85). 'I know I need to do a lot of hard work to close that gap, but everything is going fine with my preparation so I am confident,' he said.
