A DRUG addict died of severe head injuries after he accidentally fell on to the floor of his cell at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre, the Coroner's Court heard yesterday. A jury - sitting before Coroner Rodney Venning - returned a verdict of death by accident in the case of Lam Ma-fat. Lam, 38, who was convicted of possessing a dangerous drug, was remanded in a solitary cell at the reception centre's hospital on June 22 while a report on him was being prepared by a drug addiction treatment centre. Correctional Officer Ng Kai-on said he was on a routine check at the centre's hospital four days later when he saw Lam approaching the grille. Lam suddenly fell backwards on to the floor. Mr Ng said he did not know what had caused Lam to fall. Lam, who complained of being in pain, was transferred to the hospital's observation ward. He was then taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he died seven days later. Senior Forensic Pathologist Bobby Shum said Lam's head injuries were consistent with a slip and fall.
