Art and business have long been seen as incompatible. Designers often grumble that they have to yield to budgetary constraints and limit their artistic vision to serve their clients' needs. An upcoming exhibition features 20 of the most innovative British designers. The exhibition shows that designers, with the right dose of creativity and business know-how, can accommodate both commercial and artistic needs, producing stunning works that please both their business-minded clients and artistic purists. Since its launch in 2004, the exhibition has toured Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand, winning praise from designers and art lovers. Co-presented by UK Trade & Investment and the British Council, the Love & Money Exhibition features designs from different industries in the UK, including fashion, interior design, construction and animation. One of the designs on display is the trendy writing desk made by British top design firm, Established & Sons. Made from felt, aluminium and wood, the desks are a hip addition to modern homes. Renowned for its creative use of a wide range of materials and manufacturing techniques, Established & Sons has designed stylish and user-friendly furniture which have been showcased in furniture fairs around the world. Alasdhair Willis, chief executive of the firm, emphasised the importance of accommodating both commercial and artistic needs when designing a product. 'We always want to produce designs we'd love to own. Sometimes, that'll be commercially successful and sometimes not, but as long as we manage that balance we'll stay dynamic and have a business,' said Mr Willis. Another unconventional design which has made the top 20 list is the hugely popular video game, the Grand Theft Auto series. Produced by Rockstar North, an Edinburgh-based video games developer, the hit series is a gritty portrayal of the underworlds of Los Angeles and Miami. Featuring complex urban locations crowded with painstakingly detailed vehicles, buildings and characters, the game allows players to make more choices than in conventional games and explore the shadiest parts of the US. The Love & Money Exhibition will run from November 29 to December 1 at Stand H41, Hall 2, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Wan Chai.
