Defending Sprint champ is a donkey over 1,200m and should have missed cut
The Jockey Club's selection committee was forced to draw on the proverbial 'Wisdom of Solomon' to prune the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint field down to 14 invitees last week. But the question must be asked: would King Solomon seriously have invited Natural Blitz?
The committee found itself unable to justify the exclusion of Natural Blitz, not only because he is the reigning Hong Kong Sprint winner but also because he had filled the minor placing behind Able Prince in the Hong Kong Sprint Trial on November 19, when carrying the five-pound penalty.
The Sprint Trial is staged principally to give the up-and-coming sprinters a chance to show their ability.
In theory, filling a placing in the Trial should secure you a berth in the 'grand final' on international day three weeks later.
The only difference is that the 2005 Hong Kong Sprint was conducted over the straight 1,000 metres course, as was the Sprint Trial.
