A former senior State Food and Drug Administration official has been jailed for 15 years for gun possession and taking the equivalent of about 1 million yuan in bribes, Xinhua reported yesterday. Hao Heping , the 56-year-old former head of the administration's Department of Medical Devices, was sentenced by the Beijing No1 Intermediate People's Court on Monday. The court also ordered the confiscation of 200,000 yuan of his assets. The court said Hao took bribes from four medical equipment companies in Shanghai, Guangzhou and the provinces of Zhejiang and Shanxi between 2002 and 2004 in return for endorsing the companies' product lines. Hao was also convicted of illegally possessing six air pistols, which he claimed were works of art given to him as gifts by friends. Hao's wife, Fu Yuqing, was sentenced to five years in jail yesterday for demanding bribes from a drug company based in Shandong so the couple could decorate their apartment. Hao had worked in the mainland medical system since 1974 and was appointed director of the Medical Devices Department in 1998. His detention in June last year was followed early this year by the arrest of six other senior administration officials on bribery charges. All six suspects, including Cao Wenzhuang, director of the administration's Department of Drug Registration, were arrested in Beijing on January 12 at an annual State Food and Drug Administration conference. The cases are still being investigated. Mismanagement in the testing and approval of new drugs and medical equipment has been cited as one of the main factors that has led to soaring pharmaceutical prices and profits on the mainland in recent years.
