Increasingly stringent regulatory financial controls drove Lau Ka-chung, financial controller and company secretary of Cardlink Technology Group, to upgrade himself to cope with new challenges. This led to his enrolment in PolyU's Master of Corporate Governance in 2004. Mr Lau graduated from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology with a degree in finance in 1995. After four years of experience as auditor in a professional accounting firm and acquiring his ACCA qualification, he moved to the finance operations of listed companies. Having been with Cardlink for more than three years, Mr Lau said: 'As financial controller and company secretary, I am a gatekeeper to ensure good corporate governance and integrity. 'There is a real need to keep myself abreast of the latest changes of accounting standards and finance regulations. 'The PolyU programme is definitely fulfilling this need. The university's reputation and the fact that its programmes are highly recognised are reasons for my enrolment.' Mr Lau said the course was very demanding for students and he had to spend a lot of time on market research, class discussions and presentations. 'It is a stimulating programme that requires us to take the initiative, think meticulously and work together with other students. It helps widen my horizons and learn to look at problems from the perspective of others,' Mr Lau said. There was a balanced mix of theories and applications, such as the listing rules and legal and accounting knowledge included in the course which were highly relevant to practical work requirements, he said. 'In addition to the book theories, the professors' expertise and practical working experience gave me a lot of inspiration. 'Overall, it is a very rewarding course. I am now applying what I've learnt to my work and implementing good corporate governance policy with the company more effectively.'
