Four innovative products developed by Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) won top awards at an international trade fair in Germany.
PolyU was making its debut at the 'Ideas - Inventions - New Products' exhibition, which was held in Nuremberg last month. It attracted entries from 32 countries and cities.
The PolyU delegation won one gold and three bronze medals.
Winning the gold was a smart wristband, an anti-sleep apnoea device developed by the university's school of nursing, the institute of textiles and clothing, and the department of health technology and informatics.
The low-cost wristband, which combines acupuncture with wearable electronics, is non-invasive, reliable and easy to use.
It comes with an abdomen belt which transmits signals in response to a change in the circumference of the user's ribcage.
The wristband then releases electrical pulses to a particular pressure point, which allows the user to resume breathing without being woken.
