Where to place bets

Bets can be placed at the racecourse through various  facilities, including  service counters, self-vending terminals, multipurpose terminals or multiticket  betting terminals. Service counters accept all forms of payment. Self-vending terminals and multipurpose terminals accept electronic shroff cards and cash vouchers but not cash. Multiticket betting terminals accept only electronic shroff cards. You can buy cash vouchers at any counter or multipurpose terminal. You get an electronic shroff card  when you first apply for a betting account. If you cannot make it to the track, you can use  any of more than 100 off-course betting branches around Hong Kong. All have the same range of facilities. Punters looking for added convenience can open a betting account and use  telephone betting, online betting,  mobile betting and other services. An account  can be set up in minutes at any branch.

Types of bets

Race-goers have a number of   betting options, as listed here:

Tierce Selecting three horses that finish first, second and third in exact order.

Trio Selecting three horses that finish first, second and third in any order.

First Four Selecting the first four placegetters in any order.

Win Selecting the horse that wins the race.

Place The selected horse must finish first, second or third.

Quinella Selecting two horses, which must finish first and second (in either order).

Quinella Place Selecting two horses which must finish in any two of the top three placings.

Double Trio Choosing the first three placegetters (in any order) in two nominated races.

Triple Trio Choosing the first three placegetters (in any order) in three nominated races.

Double Selecting the winners of successive races.

Treble Choosing the winner of the last three races

Six-up Finding either the winner or second placegetter in the last six races on the programme. There is a bonus payment for finding all six winners.

All up Betting on two to three races. Dividend in previous selected race(s) will be invested automatically in subsequent selected race(s). Pools available are Win, Place, Quinella, Quinella Place and Trio.

Cross Pool All Up Betting with four different pools of two to six race combinations. Dividend in previous selected race(s) will be invested automatically in subsequent selected race(s). Pools available are Win, Place, Quinella and Quinella Place.

Minimum bets and dividends

The smallest sum  of money you can wager is HK$10. Bets must be made in multiples of HK$10, except in two cases. A HK$5 unit is accepted for multiple bets of Double, Trio, Tierce, Treble and Double Trio, provided the total ticket value is greater than HK$100. A HK$2 ticket is accepted for multiple Triple Trio and Six-up bets, again provided the total ticket value is greater than HK$100. All dividends are semaphored for a full HK$10 ticket. A win dividend of HK$90 means a return of eight times your HK$10 investment, plus that HK$10 stake returned in full. Dividends are expressed as multiples of HK$1 on the tote  indicator boards, although some television monitors show them for the full HK$10.
