IT was of no surprise to read that the police will be on a rampage on New Year through Lan Kwai Fong.
In no way do I wish to diminish the tragedy of New Year's Eve 1992-93.
It was mostly young Chinese who died in what is a prominent Western area. The Westerners were inside the bars and clubs drinking.
The problem is that there is a wonderfully large group of young Chinese who don't drink, and don't want to sit and sing karaoke.
What do they have in the way of entertainment? How are they able to express themselves, ''hang out'', and make new friends? They don't have any place to go.
They don't have many choices - so they visit the most obvious place on Hong Kong Island - Lan Kwai Fong.
Unfortunately, it is only as big as the Western community that uses it on a daily basis.
