John Wong Yee-him, 41, a senior medical officer in geriatric psychology at Kwai Chung Hospital, is willing to give up his well-paid profession for a political appointment despite the risk that underperformance might mean him having to step down. Dr Wong said he was interested in the political appointment, which he considered a good opportunity for someone seeking greater participation in formulating policy. 'If there is a chance for me to be considered as a candidate of assistant or deputy to the minister, I think with my knowledge in medical affairs and those involving the elderly, I can make some contribution in the medical financing and old-age care [policy areas],' he said, adding that as a Liberal Party executive committee member, he had discussed his ideas with the party. Dr Wong sits on the Elderly Commission and the Consumer Council. He said young Liberals wanted greater participation in the ministerial system and had urged the party to take note of the sentiment.
