Where? Housed in a 100-year-old British colonial building in a quaint neighbourhood, this conceptual boutique-cum-gallery is just steps away from Singapore's premier shopping strip, Orchard Road. Surrender? recently merged with another cutting-edge boutique, Ambush. Who? Founded in 2003 by big-name DJ James Lavelle, who runs the International Film Collective record label Surrender All, creative director Earn Chen and directors Samuel Hong and Robert Bevan, Surrender is a London-based fashion label/record company. Its only retail boutique is in Singapore. Fashion finds: apart from its own label, Surrender? carries underground streetwear designers such as Tokyo labels Neighborhood, Head Porter and Visvim, and Supreme and HTC from the US. Menswear dominates but women have been known to buy pieces for themselves. Graphic T-shirts, cult denim brands and limited-edition trainers make this a destination for anyone who expresses an individual style. The vibe: designed by architect Jasper Chia from London firm FUUR, Surrender? is a labyrinth that includes a gallery and cafe. The retail space has stark black walls while the merchandise is displayed on streamlined silver shelves, clothing racks and a tall slender table holding fort at the centre of the room. One wall is covered by a massive glass tank in which pieces are exhibited. The crowd: cool, artistic types who want a hip shopping experience with a 'philosophy'. Chen says: 'The brand Surrender? should not be defined as admitting defeat or relinquishing control. Instead, it points to the act of living life as it comes. Surrender to life.' Extras: Surrender? has worked with brands such as Maharishi, to produce limited-edition cargo pants, and artists such as Kostas Seremetis, Will Bankhead, Kazuki Kuraishi and Alan Forbes. Surrender? is at 119 Devonshire Road, Singapore, tel: 65 6733 2130.
