FORMER Executive Councillor Professor Wang Gungwu is to retire a year early as vice-chancellor of Hong Kong University.

He was appointed to succeed Dr Rayson Huang in 1986 and was given a five-year extension of his contract in 1991.

The University Council will meet tonight to start the process of appointing a successor.
