Where? Philippines - one of the worst hit areas is in Bicol, southeast of Manila. What? Mudslides were triggered by heavy rains from Super Typhoon Durian swept down the Mayon volcano. More than 1,000 people are feared dead. The Red Cross said as many as 14,871 residents were hit by the mudflows. When? The typhoon hit last Thursday night. How? How has the government reacted? President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo declared a state of national emergency. Who? Who is helping the victims? The Philippine government and aid agencies from all around the world, among them was a five-member Spanish rescue team with a dog trained to locate bodies. Why? Why does this keep happening in the Philippines? There was a similar disaster 10 months ago, when 1,000 people died in Leyte province after being buried by a mudslide that was the result of soil made unstable by logging. And 1,000 people died the year before that in similar circumstances. Both tragedies came despite a law cracking down on unauthorised logging.
