A flock of black-faced spoonbills take to the wing at Mai Po Nature Reserve, one of the world's most important wintering sites for the endangered migratory bird.

Researchers this week counted a record 395 of the birds at the reserve, representing more than a fifth of the species' global population. The count was 340 last year and 305 in 2004, according to WWF Hong Kong, which manages the reserve.
