Half of the staff at the Hong Kong Institute of Education are to qualify for superannuation, up from the current 38 per cent. A statement this week said details of the arrangement for contract staff to be put on superannuation were now being prepared by the human resources office and would be released shortly. Acting president Bernard Luk Hung-kay welcomed the decision, saying the senior management was committed raising the proportion until it was comparable to other University Grants Committee-funded institutions. Leung Yan-wing, vice-chairman of the academic staff association, said the move had come very late, but better late than never. But he said the decision might have been made to pacify HKIEd staff when the future of the institute was shrouded in uncertainty.
