IF you are looking for the biggest and most versatile new year's gig tonight then head down to Victoria Park for an extravaganza that will feature live music and lots more besides. The event has been organised by the Urban Council and nearly all of Hong Kong's media will participate with live broadcasts both on radio and television. The line-up of entertainers includes all-girl group Girlfriends, Canto-pop stars Sammi Cheng, Andy Hui, Norman Cheung, Edmond Leung, Che Yuan-yuan plus MCs Maria Cordero and Keith Kwan. A host of local TV presenters and radio DJs will also be on hand and the evening's on-stage highlight will be the top UK pop duo Bananarama, playing their numerous hits. There will also be live links to Alan Tam's concert in the Academy For Performing Arts and to MTV's video vault from where a host of recorded live performances from the world's top rock bands, including Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Cypress Hill, will be shown. And you get all this for just a $20 entrance fee and the willingness to party. Be there 8pm sharp. Also tonight, DJ Mickey Smith will spin into the New Year in a funky way when he brings his Rebirth Of Cool gig to club IT. Smith will be joined at the turntables by his guest DJ Ollie from Acid Jazz Records in the UK. The two funkaholics promise a new year dance groove that will keep you partying till dawn. Kick off at 1am. Admission is $120. One of the hottest bands on the local scene this year, Nogabe, will stage the first night of their Afro-reggae musical New Year extravaganza at the Jazz Club. The outfit supply a steady dance groove ideal to boogie the night away. Fun starts from about 9.30pm. Following the huge success of The Wanch's Christmas Eve jam extravaganza, Hooray Howard and Co are inviting all the regulars to bring the bar down. A wee birdie told the Gig Guide that co-owner Uncle Rowland may dust off his ancestral bagpipes to join in the jam. Bring your gear along and plug in from around 10pm. Captain Mabullah are throwing a reggae party tonight at La Boheme in Wan Chai. There's a $70 cover charge and the fun and dancing starts at 11:30pm. Tomorrow: The Rock Gang will be powering into the New Year with their relentless set of hard rock and heavy metal at Amoeba. These lads don't fool around when it comes to solid partying and will let it rip from 10pm. No wimps allowed. The Wanch will feature those zany lads from Splash It About. The fellas have been pretty busy lately but have managed to find some room in their schedules for this gig. And it's sure to be a load of fun from 10pm. Nogabe will hold the second half of their new year weekend of fun and music, so if you miss Friday's show be sure to be at the Jazz Club for this one. Music starts at around 9.30pm. DJ Mickey Smith will be back after a quick recovery from the night before for more of his trademark acid jazz, funk and groovyness - this time in Westworld. Smith's old mate DJ Simon the Tipster will be joining him for some serious spinning. Doors open 1am and admission is $150. Sunday: Dave Colquhoun will play acoustic rock and blues at Mad Dogs Kowloon during happy hour. Monday: The New China Blues Agency at the Cyrano Bar at the Island Shangri-La from 9.30pm. Musical Mystery Tour at the Jazz Club will feature one of Hong Kong's least exposed blues bands Mind Your Head from around 9.30pm. Wednesday: Music Of This Century at the Fringe Club, featuring contemporary works by Lo King-wai and Ngai Kai-tai. Classic pop and rock with Bambi and The Bambinos at The Wanch, from 9pm. Dave Colquhoun plays at Mad Dogs Central. Radio Free Hong Kong at Hot Shot will feature the best in underground sounds from 9pm. The Victoria Jazz Band is back at the Jazz Club from 9.30pm. Thursday: It's Another Musical Affair with Teresa Norton at the Grand Hyatt's Champagne Bar from 10pm. Plus: The Wanch's resident guitar man, Sammy, takes to the stage on Sunday through Wednesday from 9pm with his mix of rock, folk and country music. Music Lights play rhythm and blues at the Cyrano Bar, Island Shangri-La, from 9pm. Playing barfly favourites is Benjamin Jacinto at the Island Shangri-La Lobby Lounge from 7pm from Monday to Saturday. Edwin Gutierrez keeps the stool warm on Sunday.
