A 55-year-old divorced man was sent to prison yesterday for having sex with a 14-year-old runaway girl he met in a park. Liu Hoi-ping was jailed for two years and three months after pleading guilty to indecent assault and unlawful sexual intercourse with an under-age girl. He denied a charge of rape, which was left on the file. Deputy Judge Esther Toh Lye-ping described the case in the Court of First Instance as 'tragic' for both the victim and the defendant. The girl had a poor relationship with her divorced mother and had a history of running away from home, the court heard. 'It is very sad that, in Hong Kong, there are victims like this young girl, often running away from home and willing to follow strangers home,' the judge said. The court heard that on January 30, during the Lunar New Year holiday, Liu met the girl in a small park in Yau Ma Tei. After chatting for a while, Liu invited her to his home in Yau Ma Tei, saying he would cook for her. Despite telling her he would not harass her, he had sex with her that night. He also indecently assaulted her while they were in bed. Liu paid her HK$100 when she left the next day. The girl reported to the police later that day that she had been sexually harassed and Liu was arrested on February 1. He told police he had not planned to molest the girl when he met her in the park but took pity on her when she told him she had not eaten for two days.
