With 12 days left to Christmas, if you're flexible there's still time to escape the smog. There are holidays to be had in sun or snow. Here are our top 10 last-minute getaways LONDON Probably the best deals this Christmas out of Hong Kong are the flights to London, thanks partly to the arrival of Oasis and its HK$1,000 flights to Gatwick. However, this isn't the only budget option. Oasis offers a one-way fare of HK$1,000 plus HK$619 tax if you are prepared to leave Hong Kong on the 1.30am flight on Christmas Day morning (fly.oasishongkong.com). Getting back is pricier though. Leave London at 8.10pm on either December31 or January1 and your flight will cost you HK$1,790 plus HK$944 tax, making the cheapest return option with Oasis HK$4,403. The lowest fare offered last week was with British Airways, leaving Hong Kong at 1.10am on Christmas Day, arriving at Heathrow at 6.20am and returning at 8.25pm on New Year's Day. The total, including tax, comes to HK$4,394 ( www.britishairways.com ). A few days makes a big difference - it will cost you HK$8,224 if you fly British Airways to London on December21 and return on the 28th in time for New Year in Hong Kong. For HK$2 more than the cheapest BA fare, you can fly with Qantas, available through Zuji ( www.zuji.com ) leaving Hong Kong at 8am on Christmas morning and flying back at 12.25pm from London on January1. Cathay Pacific ( www.cathaypacific.com ) offers return flights from HK$5,244 and Virgin Atlantic's fare ( www.virgin-atlantic.com ) is HK$5,644 including tax. If you fancy somewhere warmer, the same airline will fly you to Tobago via Sydney on the same dates for under HK$2,000 extra. FRANCE Oasis only flies to London, which might explain why other European destinations tend to be a bit pricier even if you go for the least sociable flying dates. Flying to Paris on Christmas Day with Air France ( www.air france.com) will cost you HK$2,300 plus tax, and flying back on January1 another HK$2,390 plus tax, giving you a total tax-inclusive return trip price of HK$7,017. You might do better to look at a package such as a seven-day, four-night package offered by Farrington American Express Travel ( www.amextravel.com.hk ), leaving Hong Kong on December23 for HK$7,599, plus tax. CAMBODIA Where better to spend Christmas or the New Year than watching the winter sun rise over the splendour of Angkor Wat? Two-night packages at the Sofitel Royal Angkor in Siem Reap are being offered by www.4thetravel.com for HK$3,988, plus tax. NEARER THE NORTH POLE Finally, for those who want a white Christmas, Finland's national carrier Finnair ( www.finnair.com ) can take you up into the frozen north of Helsinki on Christmas Day and bring you back on January3 for HK$9,496. Alternatively, head up to Harbin - home of the ice festival and the coldest major city on the mainland. Flights via Beijing with Air China cost HK$5,317 inclusive of tax through Farrington American Express ( www.amextravel.com.hk ). NORTH AMERICA One of the best deals to the United States is Los Angeles, via Taiwan on China Airlines, leaving Hong Kong at 11.30am Christmas Day and returning at 9.15pm, January1, for HK$6,804 exclusive of taxes ( www.china-airlines.com ). Forget about a Miracle on 34th Street this Christmas, if you've got family in Vancouver (below) you can have an extended break with China Airlines for HK$5,146, including tax ( www.zuji.com ). You'll need to fly out on December19, however, and the earliest you can fly back is likely to be January8. Every other day is fully booked. BALI It may not be particularly Christmassy, but Bali is always popular as a seasonal getaway. Swire Travel ( www.swiretravel.com ) offers a four-night, five-day Christmas getaway to Bali with Cathay Pacific on December23 from HK$6,990 per person. Four-night deals are also available on the same dates in Bangkok from HK$4,290 or Osaka from HK$6,390. THAILAND Boxing Day is the second anniversary of the tsunami that devastated Phuket. See how it has bounced back by going on a five-day, four-night break with Westminster Travel ( www.westminstertravel.com ). Prices exclusive of tax range from HK$5,090 for the Hotel Serene to HK$8,790 for the Sheraton Grande Laguna. Dragonair resumes direct flights to Phuket this month, and four-night Christmas packages from December23 are available through American Express Vacations (Tel: 31213121). If you prefer the capital, a Thai Airways flight to Bangkok leaving at 7.55am on Christmas Day and returning at 3.20pm on New Year's Day is available for HK$3,436, including tax, from Zuji ( www.zuji.com ). Alternatively, you can book a four-night, five-day Christmas break at the Anatara Resort and Spa in Hua Hin, leaving on Christmas Day, for HK$6,699 per person, excluding tax ( www.amextravel.com.hk ). CHINA Dragonair ( www.dragonair.com ) is offering three-night breaks at the Holiday Inn Sanya Bay Resort in Hainan for HK$1,580 plus tax, leaving on December19 and getting back to Hong Kong in time for Christmas. If you want to spend Christmas in China, Dragonair also offers three-night packages to Beijing and Shanghai for HK$3,790 upwards, Qingdao for HK$3,390 upwards and Xian for HK$2,990 upwards, all excluding tax. AFRICA If you're looking for somewhere as far removed from a traditional Christmas as possible, Cathay Pacific flies direct to Johannesburg in South Africa. You can fly there on December25 and return on January1 for a HK$8,678, inclusive, and be there in about 12 hours.
