If horror movies are anything to go by, journalism must be the most dangerous profession on the planet given the high body count.
In The Grudge 2, the sequel to the remake of a popular J-horror franchise, Hong Kong heart-throb Edison Chen Koon-hei plays a young journalist who dies in the dark room, still a common murder site for journalists in films despite the popularity of the digital camera.
His neck is snapped by a vengeful, long-haired spirit which looks like a toad and walks around like a zombie.
The film would have been more interesting if the bad guy really was a zombie toad, but in The Grudge 2, there's no such novelty.
As in the first film, which is also directed by Takashi Shimizu, we are treated to scene after scene of people having their necks snapped by the female ghost, Kayako, after they visit the haunted house in which she died. The reason for their visits is anybody's guess.
The only character with a purpose is Aubrey (Amber Tamblyn), who is sent by her mother to bring her sister Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) home from Japan. Karen has been cursed, and to the dismay of fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, she jumps to her death from the hospital building early in the film, leaving her sister devastated.
