Opposition legislators in Macau yesterday renewed their call for Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau-wah to 'account to the public' for the corruption case against former secretary for transport and public works Ao Man-long.

Mr Ho said in a letter to the Legislative Assembly on Monday that he would not be making public comments on the case, as the judicial process had already started.

In the letter, Mr Ho also pointed out that under Macau's Basic Law he was accountable only to the central government on such issues.

Ao was arrested in a joint anti-corruption probe by Hong Kong and Macau graft busters this month. He faces unspecified corruption charges. The 50-year old engineer was sacked on the night of his arrest.

Lawmaker Au Kam-san said legislators were not seeking details of the case and Mr Ho was 'just using the judicial process as an excuse'.

He said the arrest of Ao and 11 others had exposed long-standing flaws in the land disposal system and 'Mr Ho needs to explore what is necessary to improve the system'.
