Environment chief has blood-sport solution to a problem over pigs
Compared with the intractable problems of polluted air and fume-spewing traffic jams, the solution to the increasing havoc caused by marauding bands of wild pigs in the New Territories is relatively simple: kill them.
That's what we gleaned from Secretary for Environment, Transport and Works Sarah Liao Sau-tung yesterday when she said there had been a surge in the number of 'pig-killing operations' this year. While most citizens are barred from bearing arms against animals, the 007s of the porcine world are two groups in Tai Po and Sai Kung authorised to go hunting periodically to keep the numbers down.
Asked at a Legislative Council question time whether the pig terminators were likely to receive any more reward than the resulting supply of wild pork, Dr Liao smiled.
'We believe a lot of people will volunteer because they enjoy it as a hobby. There aren't many opportunities to hunt in Hong Kong, so this is the one chance to indulge in a blue-blooded activity.'
