YOUNG Thai and Filipino women are being lured to Hong Kong, set up in bogus marriages and forced to work as prostitutes in a racket run by the Sun Yee On triad society, according to police.

An undercover police operation against vice in a building five minutes' walk from Sau Mau Ping police headquarters ended yesterday with the closure of several brothels.

These had been operating for about three years on several levels of an old building housing families.

Police intelligence indicated that the arrival of the prostitutes in Hong Kong and their residency as bogus newlywed wives of Chinese locals was arranged by the Sun Yee On.

''We believe the Sun Yee On are the masterminds behind this scheme, but at the moment we don't have sufficient evidence to prosecute,'' said Sau Mau Ping police district operations officer Chief Inspector Ringo Chan Lik-kin.

More than a dozen plain-clothes officers and almost as many uniformed officers went to Yan On Mansions in Sau Mau Ping yesterday to execute a six-month closure of the brothels.
