Name: Meredith Sarah Guy Age: 17 City/Country: Melbourne/ Australia School name: Caulfield Grammar School Star sign: Capricorn I'm generally quite loud, but I can sometimes be shy in big groups of people. I'm easy to get to know and very approachable. I am planning to study law at university, and hopefully I'll become a lawyer. Melbourne is a fantastic city. It's great fun: there is always something to do, and people are really friendly. Nothing beats shopping in Australia. Australia is famous for its fantastic bargains, especially at markets such as the Vic Market or the South Melbourne market. You can find dresses, T-shirts, shoes, sunglasses and jackets at great prices. Food shopping in Australia is known for its diversity: it's easy to find food from China, Japan, India and Thailand. At school, I study English, Chinese, maths, psychology, health and human development, and physical education theory. My school life is exciting and busy. I spend about three to four hours a night on homework, or more if I have an assignment. English is my first language, but I can also speak fairly fluent Putonghua, and a bit of French. I learned Putonghua because my parents thought it would be a good idea for me to be bilingual in case I ever decided to work in Asia. It is also helpful in applying for jobs. When I have free time, I like to relax. I usually go to the gym or watch TV. But I rarely have free time at the moment, because I have exams coming up. My friends and I usually hang out on Chapel Street. There are hundreds of shops, restaurants and facilities to suit everyone. Chadstone and Southland are other favourite shopping areas. I like Australia because of freedom people have. This freedom allows students and younger people to find part-time jobs and feel more independent. I'm a part-time sales assistant in a supermarket. I have learned how to use a complicated cash register, use the credit card machine and deal with the public. My family is great. I have a very close relationship with my mum and dad, and love spending time with them. My dad is a pilot so he's often away on trips, but whenever he comes home I enjoy spending time with him. My brother and sister live in Sydney, so I don't get to see them much. But I'm still very close to them. We eat a mix of food, ranging from Chinese to Thai, and of course we eat typical Australian meals. An Australian meal is usually steak and vegetables, or a Sunday roast with potatoes and vegetables. Many Australian families enjoy a Sunday roast every week. They also like snacks such as meat pies, sausage rolls and Chico rolls (a mixture of vegetables covered in batter). I often wear jeans and T-shirts or jackets. I have a few dresses for going out, but mostly I just wear my jeans. I buy my own clothes sometimes, as I have a part-time job and can afford it, but usually my mum or dad buy my clothes for me. My idol is Tom Delonge, the lead guitarist for punk rock band blink-182. He is such a talented songwriter and musician - he never ceases to put a smile on my face! My favourite sport is swimming. I started swimming when I was five years old, and have loved it ever since. I've been in many different squads, but at the moment I just swim for leisure. The most important events in Australia are either the Australian Football League grand final, or the Melbourne Cup. Almost everybody celebrates on these days. If you want to make friends with teens from other countries, send an e-mail to email@example.com . Sunday Young Post will forward all e-mails to Meredith.
