Three Hong Kong students won bronze medals at the Third International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) in Brazil earlier this month. It was the first time the SAR had taken part in the competition. This year, 180 students attended, coming from 31 countries and regions, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia and South Korea. Form Four students Sung Hoi (Shap Pat Heung Rural Committee Kung Yik She Secondary School), Cheung Siu-long and Wong Yin-wai (both from Ying Wa College) snatched the bronze. Other members on the SAR team were Form Three student Ho Chi-wai (Ying Wa College) and Heep Yunn School's fourth formers, Vivian Ngai Cheuk-yan and Gladys Wong Ching-yan. The team members had achieved outstanding performances at the Hong Kong Budding Scientists Awards 2005-2006. They were also given training at the University of Hong Kong during July and November. The syllabus for the IJSO was adapted from the International Baccalaureate programme for 15-year-old students, covering topics such as physics, chemistry and biology up to Form Six level.
