Hong Kong Museum of Art Ends March 4

After about four years of planning - and numerous delays - a major retrospective on Hong Kong Chinese ink master Wucius Wong has finally opened - and it's been well worth the wait.

At the East-West Crossroads - The Art of Wucius Wong features 77 representative paintings in five sections, charting the artist's stylistic evolution and achievements during the past five decades.

Instead of a chronological narrative, the exhibition opens with the artist's latest works - arguably his finest yet - that place a strong focus on Hong Kong as a city and urbanisation. According to the museum's chief curator Tang Hoi-chiu, the show aims to illustrate the parallel between Wong's development and that of the local society.

'What is interesting about Wong's work is that it changes from time to time in terms of theme or the medium he uses,' the curator says.

'His paintings cannot be easily labelled. They are not ink or western and his style tends to sway, depending on which period you are looking at.'
