Animal welfare group inundated as canine adoptions decline

A drop in the number of people adopting stray dogs has left the SPCA with 100 animals on its hands.

Thirty-three dogs have been adopted so far this month compared with 67 last December, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said.

Fiona Woodhouse, the group's deputy director, said the reason could be more people leaving Hong Kong for holidays, but she noted that there had not been a drop in the number of cats being adopted.

'We are having more puppies coming in, but can't accept them [because we don't have enough space] while fewer dogs are being adopted,' Ms Woodhouse said.

She said previous campaigns aimed at educating the public about the benefits of sterilising cats and the suitability of feline pets to small Hong Kong homes might be factors in the comparatively stable rate of cat adoptions.

She also said with a better economy, people were responding to aggressive marketing by pet shops.
