Stewards' decision a bit much

2-MIN READ2-MIN

OH dear, what have they been up to? We refer to our trusty band of eagle-eyed stipendiary stewards and the matter of a horse called Diamond Treasure.

You may recall this horse finished third to Win Label at Happy Valley on Wednesday night, edged out of the quinella in the final couple of strides by Fortune Ride.

The fact that the David Oughton galloper was hanging at the first and final bends was clearly no help to the cause of Walter Swinburn who rode the galloper.

Diamond Treasure was fitted with a ring bit as opposed to the regular snaffle bit - and this is a distinct aid to horses with a tendency to hang.

The steward on duty decreed, with the aid of a list supplied to him, that Diamond Treasure had not been declared with a ring bit and that it had to be taken away. This was despite protestations from assistant trainer Andy Leung in the absence of Oughton that the horse always wore the equipment.

Oughton returned from his Christmas break in England to be informed at the track by chief stipe Bernard Hargreaves that he could expect to have some money taken off him.

Not so. An inquiry yesterday prior to racing established the true facts that the horse was properly registered to carry the equipment.
