Anson Chan says leader can use election to become the 'people's chief executive'

Anson Chan Fang On-sang yesterday urged Donald Tsang Yam-kuen to become 'the people's chief executive' by mapping a clearer path to democracy in his election platform.

The former chief secretary, who has announced she will not take part in the chief executive election, said this was one way Mr Tsang could align himself with public interest under the existing system.

Unless there are constitutional changes, the chief executive can be elected only by the 800-member Election Committee.

'But even within this existing system, the chief executive still has room to improve and let the public feel that he is 'our CE',' she said.

Mrs Chan said she hoped to see election platforms that included policies on livelihood issues such as education, health care and the widening wealth gap.

'What I also hope to see is a clearer opinion on matters such as democratic development and universal suffrage. [Chief executive] candidates should let the public know, at this moment in time, how are we to walk this journey to democracy,' said Mrs Chan.
