DAB man says advisers shouldn't quit if ignored

Members of the pan-democratic camp on a government advisory committee on political reform should take part actively in its work, not resign if officials ignore their views, an executive councillor says.

'Since they sit on it [the committee], they should try their best to carry out their work. If they have any dissatisfaction, they can air it during the meetings,' said Tsang Yok-sing, a member of the Commission on Strategic Development's executive committee.

Mr Tsang said pan-democrats had given their views on universal suffrage during meetings of the commission's committee on governance and political development. The government would listen to the views of the commission, he added.

His comments came after Lee Cheuk-yan, one of seven pan-democrats on the committee, said he had suggested to his allies that they resign if the government insists the Legislative Council's trade-based functional constituencies are compatible with universal suffrage.

Mr Tsang, of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong - the biggest pro-government party - was speaking on the sidelines of a reception held by the central government's liaison office.
