Beating the odds to call the tune

Steve Cray

Audio-visual digital musician Choi Sai-ho has managed to scale the heights despite an education system 'out of tune with creative pupils'.

Choi, 23, a master's student at City University has been chosen as Hong Kong's first representative to the Red Bull Music Academy, taking one of 60 places competed for by more than 2,400 entries worldwide. The academy, in its ninth year, showcases multi-cultural musical talent.

Choi, who plays the violin but now specialises in electronic music, went to the academy's two-week workshop in Melbourne in October, where he performed a number of his compositions, including one based on Hong Kong's Mark Six lottery and another, The Educators, which features a montage of school and university logos. 'I suffered a lot from this education system. I wasn't a very good student, academically, and the system doesn't cater for creative people,' he said.

Choi will be performing at Lively, Lab Yellow, 8F Yeung Yiu Chung (No 5) Industrial Building, 34 Tai Yip Street, Kowloon Bay, on Sunday, January 21, 4.30pm. Tel 2331 3220.
