Groomed for improvement

Katie Lau

Jill Vidal is often mistaken for her better known twin sister Janice, but she said she's determined

to do whatever it takes to gain a foothold on her own terms.

When Janice recently swept the year-end awards, the 23-year-old Jill (left) had been on the scene for only a year. 'I'm very new to the music industry, but I've learned many things, and it's going to be a long road,' the pop singer said. 'I have a lot to improve - not just singing skills. I think I can do a lot of different dances.'

Jill's image is more upbeat, with strong dance beats on her songs, whereas Janice captures hearts with her soulful love ballads.

Jill was critical about her recent performances over the past year. 'I'm not satisfied. I think there's so much I can do to improve as a performer,' she said.

That includes more practice in spoken Cantonese and Putonghua for the native English speaker. 'I know it's a lot of hard work and I'm going to work on the pinyin.'

Jill said she would follow in her sister's footsteps and set up a fan club soon. 'Everyone thinks we're the same vocally and the way we laugh. She started out first and she can teach me what she went through, but I want to branch out. I hope to be successful not just in Hong Kong, but also Taiwan, Korea and Japan.'
