Emily lau recovering from appendectomy in hospital

The Frontier lawmaker Emily Lau Wai-hing is recovering in hospital after having her appendix removed on Wednesday. Ms Lau appeared to be in good health and would probably be discharged within a few days, according to Democratic Party lawmaker Cheung Man-kwong, who visited her yesterday. He was accompanied by Democratic Party chairman Albert Ho Chun-yan and Civic Party lawmaker Fernando Cheung Chiu-hung.

village representative elections begin today

The Home Affairs Department has urged eligible voters to bring their polling notice and identity documents and vote in the Village Representative Elections, which begin today. A total of 634 candidates are competing for 325 seats in the elections, which are open to about 170,000 registered voters. A further 995 candidates have already been returned uncontested. Polling will be held from noon to 7pm for five consecutive weekends until February 4.

Over US$200 million worth goods of Hong Kong and Macau origin have been exported tariff-free to the mainland via the Gongbei crossing between Zhuhai and Macau since the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement came into effect in January 2004, according to Xinhua. Tax exemptions up to December last year totalled more than US$100 million.
