Chinese Super League club Tianjin Teda have been ordered to pay an unprecedented US$1.5 million in damages to their former coach, Giuseppe Materazzi, for breach of contract. The ruling was handed down by the Switzerland-based Court of Arbitration for Sport. Materazzi was sacked halfway through his three-year contract with Tianjin in 2003. If Tianjin decide not to appeal, or an appeal fails, it would entail the highest contractual compensation imposed on a Chinese soccer club. The coach is the father of Italy's World Cup winner Marco Materazzi, the victim of Frenchman Zinedine Zidane's infamous headbutt.
