Q What do you think of the smoking ban?
I have just returned from vacation in Scotland, where no-smoking legislation was introduced more than a year ago, although it is not as stringent as the Hong Kong legislation appears to be.
Despite this, Scotland has seen an increase in obesity in the population that has been linked to people trying to curtail their smoking and replace cravings with other things, such as food.
It is also apparent that the number of bars and restaurants has also been reduced due to the smoking ban, something I fear we will see in Hong Kong.
I have been back only a week, and in a quick poll among my usual eateries and bars, they have seen happy-hour customers drop off the scale and lunch bookings reduced.
It may take time for the impact to be fully realised, but I'm not sure the Hong Kong legislation was given much thought based on its rushed introduction in comparison to the time Scotland and England have taken.
As a non-smoker, I am surprised the government was so keen to introduce legislation that was bound to hit the very people they are keen to attract - mainland tourists, for whom smoking is the norm.
