Cambridge has several departments and institutes offering research degrees in biotechnology and its constituent subject areas. The Institute of Biotechnology, set up in 1988, focuses on multidisciplinary research and aims to transfer advances in biological science to industry. The department of biochemistry received the top 5* rating in the last national research assessment exercise. The MPhil lasts one year and PhD degrees usually take between three and four years. A wide range of research topics is offered. The Institute of Biotechnology has a submission rate of nearly 100 per cent within four years, with many students taking just three years. Requirements An upper-second-class degree. Cost About #13,905 (HK$211,495). Scholarships Cambridge Overseas Trust. The individual Cambridge colleges also give awards. MIT's biological engineering division brings together engineering techniques with the data from genomics. Its aims are to advance understanding of how biological systems operate and to develop biology-based technologies for applications such as the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease, as well as novel materials, devices and processes. The PhD programme has two complementary tracks, Applied Biosciences and Bioengineering. Students in either track my pursue research projects in any area by agreement with their supervisor. Requirements A degree with 'high academic achievement'. GRE: general test required. Cost US$16,700 for a total of US$33,400 per year (2 academic semesters). For the graduate embarking on a career in the life-sciences, the University of Hong Kong offers a wealth of research programmes. In the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, the department of biochemistry has programmes in applied bioinformatics, proteomics, functional genomics, developmental molecular biology and recombineering, to name a few, while the Faculty of Science has programmes in biotechnology, molecular biology, food science, biological chemistry, molecular biology, and many others in the departments of botany, zoology and chemistry. A PhD normally takes four years. Requirements: A second-class honours degree. Those with an MSc, may be admitted to a three-year PhD programme. Cost HK$42,100 per annum.
