Wan Chai district has launched a public art competition that could see up to HK$2.8 million spent this year to add a splash of colour to its drab concrete footbridges.

Eight footbridges around Wan Chai and Causeway Bay, and a series of concrete columns underneath the Canal Road flyover, will be decorated as part of the project, jointly organised by Wan Chai District Council and the Hong Kong Arts Centre.

The designs will be picked from submissions to a public competition which runs until February 14.

Connie Lam Suk-yee, programme director for the centre, said it was approached by the district council in September to spruce up the footbridges that link modern north Wan Chai with the older southern part.

'Hong Kong's footbridges are quite boring. What we want to see in the designs is something that can light up Wan Chai's atmosphere,' she said.

The competition is also aimed at increasing public participation in art.
