An interesting new Aqua Group Chinese restaurant opened on Wyndham Street last Thursday and the prints of foodie Clavin Yeung are clearly all over it. Behind an imposing pair of doors and down a stairwell lined with little Buddha statues is Yun Fu, which will serve food inspired by inner China, with the regional flavours of Tibet , Xinjiang and Yunnan . They even have a traditional spit to roast entire lamb or pig, while the detailed decor is part Indiana Jones film set, part monastery chic.
But opening night revealed another unique dimension to Yeung. Performing on a makeshift stage was a musical group from Beijing, of which the chef also plays a major part. It seems he is semi-managing the group. 'We're going to produce a recording of them,' his Aqua Group partner Mabel Wong explained. 'There's just three women in the group - pipa, erhu and singer - but we invited a fourth to perform for the night too. They're all from north China and do crossover mountain songs. We're thinking of a name for them now.'
