The city's hip, happening and powerful strutted their stuff in the name of style at the Island Shangri-La Hotel's grand ballroom last night. The women dressed to impress - skin with style could have been the theme. The men were kitted out in the ever-dapper dinner jacket and clinked cocktails to a driving soundtrack. As photographers jostled for position around her, the woman soon to be named Fashion Model of the Year, Amanda Strang, said the fact so many of the city's most stylish people were in the same room did not intimidate her. 'They are style awards, so you can really do your own thing. I'm not a very glamorous person. I like to dress with simplicity but with plenty of attention to detail. You really have to come up close to catch all I'm wearing.' Strang's humble acceptance speech made her a crowd favourite. 'The people who have gone before me have won because they have made businesses that have helped the city,' she said of the business winners. 'My award doesn't say anything like that about me. When I get up in the morning I look nothing like this, so I want to thank all those people out there that make me look the way I do.' Fashion Designer of the Year Barney Cheng made a grand entrance with some of the city's most beautiful women modelling his dresses, including socialite Gioia de Michele Nassetti and his goddaughter, Laetitia Yu. He won applause for dedicating his award to his parents. 'They let me do the non-Chinese thing, with no pots and pans, so I can now go out and dress beautiful women and all these movers and shakers around Asia.'
