Douglas Whyte could easily improve an already-impressive Happy Valley strike rate with the help of a sparkling book of rides at the city venue this evening. The Durban Demon is an idol of punters - who know him by his Chinese name Why-Dugg - and it's his incredible consistency that keeps the fans coming back to support him. Even Whyte's rivals among the jockey ranks marvel at the way, race after race, he puts his mounts in exactly the right spot and makes the right decisions around 95 per cent of the time. His Happy Valley statistics this season are even slightly better than those at Sha Tin, where he has a 14.3 per cent win strike rate and a 29.6 per cent quinella strike rate. On the island side, those figures improve to 16 wins from 98 rides, a strike rate of 16.3 per cent, and add another 15 second placings for a total of 31 times in the quinella at a strike rate 31.6 per cent. Whyte can get straight down to business in the opening event, a Class Five over 1,800 metres, with the staying-bred Dashing Flair, prepared by an astute local horseman in Peter Ng Bik-kuen. Dashing Flair showed he has what it takes at only his third start, when he finished third to Happy Sunday over 1,200m at Sha Tin in Class Four, beaten just 33/4 lengths. Since then, he's started to race more dourly, as you might expect of a son of the Sadler's Wells stallion Carnegie, winner of an Arc de Triomphe at the classic distance of 2,400m. But his last two runs at 1,600m have again showed he's looking for further, and the slightly more forgiving surface will play in his favour as well. Dashing Flair was a liberal $110 chance on last night's 7pm tote call. But as the evening goes on, Whyte will find himself on a number of better-fancied horses. He will handle Super Fantasy ($87) in the second, Thistle King ($80) in race three, favourite Capability ($48) in the fourth, Flag Finder ($39) in race five and Classa Win ($88) in the sixth. Whyte fans have two strong ones to come home on - Windicator ($30 favourite) in the seventh and the John Size-trained Super Honey, at the value price of $89, in the last.
