Non-pedigree chums

The Mongrel Club held their first ever social gathering - Canines 'R' Us - last Sunday at the Hong Kong Doggie Park in Pat Heung.

Sixty dog owners brought 47 mongrels to participate in the event. Owners shared their experiences of keeping mongrels and various training tips, while the dogs ran around on the grass making new friends.

The Mongrel Club was established in October 2006 by a group of proud mongrel owners. They wanted to let people know that mongrels are equally great canine companions as pedigree dogs. They also hope more people will choose to keep them as pets rather than abandoning them or using them as construction site guard dogs.

Mongrel Club member Rebecca Ngan urged others to adopt mongrels.

She said: 'I work at the SPCA and often see mongrels being abandoned. Most people usually come to look for pedigree dogs. But mongrels are clever and obedient.

'I adopted my mongrel when he was about one year old, and I've had him for more than a year. He never bites and I love him.'
