Interior and furniture designer The founder of Paul Design in Cheung Sha Wan is a DIY enthusiast: he designed every piece of furniture in his home. A keen recycler, Paul Chan takes old materials and gives them a new lease of life. Favourite homeware store 'Jisheng Wellborn [Yingbinlu, Panyu, Guangzhou, http://gz.jswb.com.cn/index.aspx ]. It has all sorts of high-quality, avant-garde and traditional-style Chinese furniture, including Ming and Qing styles. The selection is huge. It's run by a group of designers who use genuine materials to design long-lasting, practical furniture.' Favourite living designer '[New York-based Egyptian designer] Karim Rashid. He's good at new and versatile design concepts. He's a bit like Philippe Starck but he interprets his ideas in a slightly different way.' Favourite item at home 'A table I designed, using dozens of paper cylinders I ordered from a factory. I put them all together in a spiral shape and on the top is a piece of glass that someone discarded. It took me only 30 minutes to make.' Favourite design magazine 'Frame [ www.framemag.com ]. It features a lot of furniture products with innovative designs, along with the latest design information from Europe. It's very different from Asian magazines. Design no-no 'Plagiarism. Many designers have a problem distinguishing copying from analysing a design. Copying doesn't involve thinking or creativity. But on the whole there's no rigid rule in design.'
