A two-month-old boy died in a Macau hospital yesterday, nine days after his Hong Kong mother was arrested for child abuse and neglect. The vomiting baby was admitted with bruises to his head. He died early yesterday in the intensive care unit of the Hospital Conde de S?o Januario. A spokesman for the Macau Judicial Police said the boy's father had not shown up to claim the baby. 'We don't even know who his father is,' he said. The baby was taken to hospital by his mother on January 14. A suspicious doctor alerted police and said the baby had apparently suffered from severe shaking and flinging. The baby was categorised as brain-dead last week. Macau police arrested the 31-year-old mother, surnamed Ho, on January 17 on a charge of child abuse and neglect. After selling a flat in Hong Kong for more than HK$1 million, the suspect moved to Macau last August with the proceeds and often visited casinos. She gave birth in November. Police said she often left her son alone in a friend's flat in the Areia Preta district of the city while going out to gamble. Police said she was suspected of venting her anger on her son after losing money. The suspect has posted bail and is awaiting trial in Macau at an unspecified date, according to the spokesman.
