Get wig the programme

Want a new look without dramatically changing your locks?

The director of Rever Salons in Central and Kowloon, Andre Frezouls, says wigs have become de rigueur among those in the know.

There are two main types of wig, Frezouls says. 'Synthetic fibre wigs are pre-cut and styled for a mass market,' he says. 'They're lighter, cheaper and easier to look after than real hair wigs, but they only last for about nine months. Most of these wigs are made in China. It's a huge industry there that employs an enormous manual labour force.

'Then there are real hair wigs, which are more natural looking and more expensive. They last longer, too.'

If you're thinking of getting a wig or extensions, Laki Boulieris, director of Central hairdressers HippFish, advises having a consultation with a professional.

'Don't get sucked in to buying some- thing online without professional advice,' he says. 'I know people who've spent HK$10,000 on a real-hair wig that looked terrible.

'You can spend half that and get the real thing. At HippFish the average price of a wig is HK$4,500.'

Boulieris says clients increasingly are wanting to imitate celebrities who often wear wigs and extensions to create their looks.
