Back in the world of political PR ... and back where it all started
Former DAB legislator and ex-convict Gary Cheng Kai-nam is back in the world of political PR. The once-rising political star, who was released from jail in 2002 after his conviction on charges of abusing his position as a legislator to benefit his public relations business, has among his new clients the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong. He helped found one of its forerunners in 1992.
Former DAB chairman Tsang Yok-sing has revealed the group tapped his expertise in PR, media strategy and image-building. But he was quick to add that Mr Cheng was no longer involved in party work. He recently quit as a senior editor at a weekly news magazine to relaunch his PR firm.
Mr Tsang described their renewed relationship as 'a bit strange'. 'We are talking to each other like client and service provider,' he said.
An official 'of a much lower class'
Constitutional affairs minister Stephen Lam Sui-lung might have scored extra political points against the Civic Party during a Legco question-and-answer session last week when he dismissed Taiwan's democratic experience as a 'negative lesson'. But Taiwanese officials were quick to remind him he was just a lowly official in a big pond.
