This Love by Khalil Fong
Khalil Fong Dai-tung's music breathes fresh air into the stale Canto-pop music scene. His new album This Love, a follow-up to his acclaimed debut Soul Boy, proves the singer-songwriter is one of the most promising in town.
The Hawaii-born all-rounder played most of the instruments on the album as well as composing, arranging and producing it. But don't be fooled by the soppy title. The album is actually an array of soothing, mid-tempo songs in Putonghua about the many different facets of love that includes strong elements of soul and jazz.
Fong's music is like a fusion between Taiwan's David Tao or Wang Lee-hom, and the rhythm and blues of Stevie Wonder or Michael Jackson. Boys and Girls Holding Hands is a cheerful song with a vintage feel about how love makes the world a better place. Spring Breeze Blows, as its title suggests, is a soothing acoustic ballad and Sigh!, featuring raps from C Kwan and 6 Wing of the hip hop group Fama, is a great track for anyone who really likes to get up and dance.
