Where can I find some longish black boots that look decent, have some tread for light snow but are not high heeled? I don't need anything fancy or from a famous brand - something sensible, such as Clarks, will do.

Bootie and the Beast, Kennedy Town

The Dictator rules: My skin is crawling. As if the words 'sensible shoes' weren't cringe-inducing enough, you've forced me to enter the depths of mediocre design and mid-prices. Thank you so much. Save time by hitting a multibrand department store such as Wing On (211 Des Voeux Road, Sheung Wan, tel: 2852 1888; www.wingonet.com). The best we saw were Florsheim's shiny (but not patent) flat leather boots (HK$1,390). Hush Puppies (remember them?) has several flat styles (HK$1,399 to HK$1,599), from classic riding shapes to some with fur trim. Geox has a wide selection of pointy- or round-toed boots (HK$1,299) while Aerosoles offers them with wedge heels and rubber tread on the soles (HK$1,099). Other brands to consider include: Merrell, Timberland and Rockport. By the way, I hope this purchase is for a trip because you have no hope of 'light snow' in this town.

The Dictator: Good question. Who on Earth would do that? Oh, you would. If you are trying to balance strict masculine tailoring with something soft and feminine, I commend you. Otherwise, go stand in the corner. DKNY (7 Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2377 9900) has a few simple camisoles in basic colours (HK$890 to HK$1,990), as does Esprit (from HK$349; shop 2219, Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2317 1312). For slightly flashier ideas, check out the discounted embellished tank tops and bustiers at outlet Tung Yuen Hong (HK$49 to HK$129; 19 Lee Garden Road, Causeway Bay, tel: 2890 7362). Although cut a little too high to be sexy, JDC's silk and lace singlets work well (HK$198 to HK$458; 10 D'Aguilar Street, Central, tel: 2526 6816). Avoid cheesy colours and stick to tonal or monochromatic mixes.
