This weekend's Bowne Inter-School Sailing Festival sees almost 100 young sailors taking to the waves off Middle Island. The two-day competition started yesterday at 10am, and will finish today at 4pm.
The students come from Island School, South Island School, West Island School, King George V School, Shatin College, French International School, Chinese International School, Hong Kong Sea School, and Jockey Club Ti-I College.
The competition has been organised and run by parents with help from professionals since 2002.
Each school sails three Topaz dinghies (boats suitable for beginners) against another school in a round robin series.
Two sailors are on each dinghy - the helmsman steers and handles the main sail, while the crewmember handles the second sail and balances. Each race lasts only a few minutes, and there are up to 55 races in the competition.
Today a race will take place around Middle Island, featuring top sailors from each school.
Prizes are awarded to the top three school teams overall, with special prizes for the round Middle Island race.
