HKPC lines up firms for manufacturing portal

The Hong Kong Productivity Council has formed an alliance with three technology companies to create an intellectual property management system for manufacturers in the Pearl River delta.

Microsoft Hong Kong, Print-Rite Holdings and Smart.net (Hong Kong) signed up  for the project last week. Financial  details were not disclosed.

The council said their goal was to set up a secure and efficient  portal that would help about 60,000 manufacturers  in  the delta gather and review  data  during product design and innovation.

quanta computer posts 52pc increase in sales

Quanta Computer, the world's largest maker of notebook computers, reported a 52 per cent increase in  sales last month.

Sales  grew to NT$50.27 billion  (HK$11.92 billion) from NT$33 billion a year earlier and NT$39.5 billion in December, spokeswoman Louise Wu said.

Swiss software deal for lenovo mobile phones

Lenovo Mobile, the mobile  handset original equipment manufacturer unit of Chinese computer giant Lenovo Group, has adopted technology from Swiss communications software provider Esmertec for its new P768 Victory brand multimedia phones to be released this  quarter.

Esmertec's Jbed  solution will serve as the software platform for the new  handsets, which have been built with chips from Texas Instruments and Broadcom.

Financial terms were not given.

Taiwan foundries to boost chip equipment spending

Taiwan's foundries plan to invest about US$11.25 billion in chip-manufacturing equipment this year, up from US$6.96 billion last year, as companies expand into 12-inch wafer production and establish new partnerships, according to a report by the United States-Taiwan Business Council.

That increase in spending would transform Taiwan into the world's largest consumer of chip equipment, accounting for about 18.8 per cent of the global market this year.

It would also see  the island surpass last year's market leader, Japan.

Industry research firm Strategic Marketing Associates estimated the global semiconductor sector would spend about US$60 billion on new chip equipment this year.

Enterprisedb targets oracle clients in asia

EnterpriseDB, an open-source software supplier from the United States,  has established its regional operations in Hong Kong to provide enterprises with a high-quality, low-cost database compatible with the product from market leader Oracle.

'We're targeting all large organisations that use Oracle's database,' EnterpriseDB president and chief executive Andy Astor said.

EnterpriseDB was founded in March 2004 with financial backers that include Charles River Ventures and Sony Online Entertainment.

The company is capitalising on the growing demand in Asia for open-source software, which purports to offer price advantages over equivalent proprietary software.

academy of sciences unit  in   pact with new york firm

The Computer Network Information Centre, a research institute with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is adopting technologies from New York-based FalconStor Software to develop data protection and remote disaster-recovery systems for mainland government agencies and enterprises.

To support that initiative, the centre and FalconStor have agreed to set up a joint research and development laboratory in China. Financial terms were not given.

'Our goal is to isolate enterprise network best practices and apply them to a general data protection and high availability model for remote data backup and disaster recovery via the internet,' said Li Jun, the centre's director.
